India's Bhupathi and Mirza win French Open mixed doubles

(BBC NEWS) India's Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza have won the mixed doubles title at the French Open.

The pair defeating Santiago Gonzalez of Mexico and Klaudia Jans-Ignacik of Poland 7-6, 6-1 in the final on Thursday.

The pair, playing as seventh seeds, are sporting heroes in India.

It was the third time they had reached a Grand Slam final. They won the 2009 Australian Open after being runners-up at the same tournament in 2008.

Bhupathi, a successful men's doubles and mixed doubles player, won the title on his 38th birthday.

"We play a dangerous kind of tennis. When we're playing well, it's kind of hard to beat us," he told a news conference.

Mirza, who did not play singles at Roland Garros following a drop in rankings, said: "Every time you enter a tournament you want to win it. That's something that you enter hoping."
